On April 22, 2022, Greater Auburn Gresham Development Corporation (GAGDC) partnered with the Stein Learning Garden of St. Sabina to bring a rainy day celebration of our planet Earth to AG GOLD School, Barton Elementary. Originally set to take place in front of the school at Darnell’s Learning Garden (dedicated to a beloved fallen student) inclement weather altered the plans. Moses Williams of Stein Learning Garden, came up with an inspired idea to create seed bombs. 25 students draped in ponchos, provided by GAGDC to keep clothes clean, sat in the cafeteria clumping together dirt, compost and Papier-mache “meatballs”. Once the spheres were shaped, the “meatballs” were moistened and rolled in seeds that ranged from sunflowers and peonies to carrots and beans, transformed into seed bombs. Students were able to take part in an activity that would increase their knowledge of the Earth and revitalize their school garden. They got a chance to take pictures with the colorful, Flowery Earth Day selfie board, created by GAGDC’s own Christa Hunt. After making nearly 200 seed bombs, the students received Grow Kits to take with them for their home gardens. GAGDC’s 2022 Earth Day was an amazing day of knowledge, Earth appreciation and teamwork.
