Cleanup highlights block club power

A 20-block stretch of the Auburn Gresham neighborhood benefited from a two-day cleanup blitz on June 24 and 25, complete with tree trimming, repainted crosswalks and beautification of two community gardens.

The focus was the streets, curbs, parkways and alleys along Morgan from 67th to 87th streets. Homeowners, community residents and volunteers participated. Activities included a roll call of 6th District Police in the vacant lot at 79th and Morgan, unveiling of new block club signs and cleaning of the garden and lot.
The event was coordinated by the Greater Auburn Gresham Development Corporation (GADC) in partnership with the City of Chicago, Morganway Homeowners and Residents Association, Cleanslate (CARA Program) and Local Initiatives Support Corp. The 6th District Police held a roll call at a vacant lot.
The City of Chicago focused many services on the area during the cleanup, with participation from: Chicago Alternative Policing Strategies Department of Streets of Sanitation Department of Water Management Department of Buildings Department of Transportation Department of Animal Care and Control Other activities in Auburn Gresham this summer included the second-annual arts and film festival at Marshall Thurgood Library and the second Community Day Business and Health Fair at the Chatham 14 Theater.
