ASM Field Team Mapping Assets for the Web

MAPSCorps Culminating event August 2013

In Auburn Gresham and surrounding communities teenagers and young adults, in a collaboration with After School Matter(ASM) and the University of Chicago, once again participated in a summer MAPSCorp intern program. The students walked neighborhoods capturing key information regarding community assets. They captured key location, owner and services information (data) on all types of assets including businesses, schools, churches, non-profits, home-based businesses etc.The data is captured via cell phones and uploads to a central database, after the data is submitted.

"The data is compiled by high school students who work full time during the summer. This year 80 students are participating in the six-week MAPScorps program, which pays $8.25 per hour."  The Greater Auburn Gresham Development Corporation (GAGDC) hired 15 of the 80 youth, who worked with 4 University of Chicago masters program interns who coordianted the effort in the field.

The program began July 8 and ended Aug. 15, said Dr. Stacy Lindau, director of the South Side Health and Vitality Studies at the University of Chicago Urban Health Initiative."

On August 30th, as the last mapper picked up the final ASM check,  we really new that summer, as we knew it in the past weeks, had come to and end. We wish all our GAGDC MAPSCorps interns a great school year and upcoming 2014.

....Until next year!
