Middle School Participates in Soapbox Showcase
Published: March 4, 2013
“8 people were shot and wounded on 79th and Essex. How do I know this? Did I read it? No, I was there.” Over 100 middle school students from 7 CPS elementary schools spoke out about the number one issue in their community. Students gave speeches about violence, school closings, poverty, animal cruelty, bullying, youth leadership, etc.
The Perspectives PLC spent a week preparing for the Soapbox Showcase learning about speech structure, style and rhetorical devices. We held a classroom competition within the PLC and from that competition we chose our 2 representatives to participate in the citywide showcase. The PLC scholars took a crucial step developing their leadership skills by learning how to give an effective persuasive and informational speech. They are dedicated to making change in their community.
