Spring is just around the corner, which means that home improvement season is almost here.  With that in mind, the Chicago Greystone & Vintage Home Program wants to get you "Ready Ready" with a series of programs aimed at helping you assess the maintenance and repair needs of your vintage home, finding the right contractor, and working with architects.  Also, keep an eye out for special programming related to the release of our new Landscape Guidelines, developed in collaboration with Christy Webber Landscapes, in late April. Rehab Ready: Planning Home Maintenance & Repair Projects

Constructed with high quality materials and built by expert craftsman, Chicago's vintage homes have continuously served the needs of generations of homeowners.  With that said, vintage homeowners do face some potential challenges including antiquated layouts, outdated mechanical systems, past improper repairs, and the need to keep up with ongoing annual maintenance.  It can sometime feel like everything has to be done at once, but that is rarely the case.  Join Matt Cole, Program Coordinator for NHS' Chicago Greystone & Vintage Home Program to learn some practical tips for assessing your home's maintenance and repair needs, as well prioritizing rehab projects.

Rehab Ready: Finding, Vetting, & Hiring Contractors

You love your vintage home and have taken the necessary time to prioritize its repair and maintenance needs.  You have also determined what you can afford to spend and secured the necessary financing (or savings) to cover the project's costs.  Now who should hire to update your kitchen, replace your roof, finish your attic, or repair your historic masonry?  How do you know if they are qualified to do the necessary work and are specifying everything needed for the repairs?  Join Matt Cole, Program Coordinator for NHS' Chicago Greystone & Vintage Program for pro tips on assessing contractors, reviewing bids, and taking steps to avoid potential surprises.

Rehab Ready: Working with an Architect

We love our vintage Chicago homes, but that doesn't mean we want to live like people did in the early 1900s or with that 30-year-old "contemporary" renovation done by a previous owner.  Maybe it's time for a kitchen and bath upgrade.  Maybe you want a larger master bedroom or need additional space for a home office, nursery, or for an elderly family member.  How can you affordably accommodate these new uses into your home while still respecting its vintage character?  An architect can help answer these questions.  Join NHS' Chicago Greystone & Vintage Home Program and the Chicago Chapter of the American Institute of Architects for a discussion of why and how working with an architect may be right for your next rehab project - including plenty of renovation examples!
