Join us for a day of giving back to the community. Events include rehabbing and repairing homes, painting and landscaping properties, conducting neighborhood tours, recognizing successful partnerships, and hosting events that educate, train and inform.
This year's projects include:
Auburn Gresham: Resource Fair and Block Beautification
7800 Block of S Morgan St, Chicago
The NHS Auburn Gresham office will conduct a NeighborWorks Day project on the 7800 block of S Morgan St, where the block club has worked diligently to change the nature of its block, starting with the loitering at the community garden at 7842 S Morgan. The project will consist of planting matching flowers and plants along the block, trimming bushes, and weeding and cleaning the block and garden. The garden will also be the site of a small resource fair for residents, consisting of a pre-purchase workshop for renters and a post-purchase workshop for property owners.

Back of the Yards: Fiesta Back of the Yards Housing Resource Booth
47th St (b/w S Ashland and S Damen), Chicago
NHS Back of the Yards will set up a housing resource booth at this year’s Fiesta Back of the Yards to take advantage of the large crowds in the heart of the Back of the Yards neighborhood. Literature providing information about NHS’ products and services will be distributed and a loan originator will be present to provide further information to attendees.
Chicago Lawn: MMRP Housing Campaign Event
W 59th to W 63rd St (b/w S Rockwell and S California), Chicago
NHS Chicago Lawn will hold a celebration/demonstration/ presentation of the neighborhood housing campaign – Reclaiming Southwest Chicago. There will be cleanup and landscaping activities at the 10-20 vacant properties identified for redevelopment by the campaign. Residents will “reclaim” the properties for people of the community. In addition, there will be information on renting in and/or purchasing the properties. A barbecue lunch at Morrill School’s new playground will conclude the day’s activities.
Englewood: Decorative Board-Up/Mural Project
W 65th and S Peoria St, Chicago
NHS Englewood will decorate boards that are on, or will be placed on, vacant buildings on the 65th & Peoria block. The painted boards will improve the visual appeal of the properties and, hopefully, discourage crime and other illicit activities around the properties. This project will assist in building up morale in this area of the Englewood community and stimulate the process of attracting homebuyers to the area, with the goal of reducing the number of vacant homes.
