National Honors for West Chatham

Bugalows in West Chatham have joined the National Register of Historic Places. "This national recognition is a huge source of pride for the neighborhood," said bungalow owner Karen WIlliams, a resident of the West Chatham Bungalow Historic District.  She worked with the local block club to help provide the extensive photo documentation required for the application.  "our homes are the biggest investment we have. Working on them is a labor of love and receiving this accolade is just wonderful," she said.  The National Park Service of the U.S. Department of Interior granted the status after a year-long process.  "the recognition of Chicago's Historic Bungalows as a significant housing type on the National Registrer is an achievement that no other housing type in the country has accomplished," said Historic Chicago Bungalow Association executive director Mary Ellen Guest.  West Chatham is tne ninth Chicago bungalow neighborhood to achieve national historic status.  The others are Wrightwood Boulevard, Schorch Irving Park, South Park Manor, North Mayfair, Falconer, Talman West Ridge and South Shore.  For more information call 312-642-9900; www.chicagobungalow.org
