Grand opening of UI Health’s Auburn Gresham health center
WHAT:
Grand opening of the Auburn Gresham Health and Wellness Center, a new school-based health center serving the Auburn Gresham community through a partnership with the University of Illinois Hospital & Health Sciences System Mile Square Health Center and the Greater Auburn Gresham Development Corporation. The grant opening was held on December 15, 2014.
The center, located at 8131 S. May Street, will serve students and families of Perspectives Middle Academy, Perspectives High School and Perspectives School of Technology- all located within the Perspectives Academy building, as well as nearby Barton, Wescott and Oglesby elementary schools.
The grand opening was a community event and celebration and the speakers include:
- Cynthia Boyd, director, UIC Office of Community Engagement and Neighborhood Health Partnerships
- Eric Gislason, interim vice chancellor for academic affairs and provost, UIC
- Dr. Robert Winn, associate vice president for community based practice, UI Health
- Kimberlie Day, chief education officer and co-founder, Perspectives Charter Schools
- Chris Brown, director of education and engagement, LISC Foundation
- Carlos Nelson, executive director, Greater Auburn Gresham Development Corp

Funding for the health center, from startup through its second year, has been provided by the LISC Foundation.
The Auburn Gresham center is one of five school-located health centers sponsored by UI Health’s Mile Square Health Center, which includes 12 federally qualified health centers in neighborhoods throughout Chicago. Other school-based clinics are at Young Women’s Leadership Charter School, 2641 S. Calumet Ave.; National Teachers Academy, 55 W. Cermak Road; Hope Institute Learning Academy, 1628 W. Washington Blvd.; and Davis Elementary, 3050 W. 39th Place.
